Can I Just Sealcoat My blacktop When It Needs Repairing?
Sealcoating your blacktop gives it significant protection against the elements and greatly enhances its overall appearance.
Sealcoat is intended to keep damaging chemicals, ultraviolet sunlight, and other damaging factors off of the surface of your blacktop in order to preserve and protect it.
Sealcoat does not however have any structural benefits.
If your blacktop has low spots especially with potholes, severe unevenness, or badly cracked or broken areas you most likely have some form of base problem, and these areas should be repaired.
Being vigilant with your sealcoating and maintenance can help avoid these problems.
How Do I know If Yours Is A Reputable Company?
Seal-Tec is Door County’s oldest, most trusted stand alone asphalt maintenance provider, in business in the area for over 20 years.
A while back while measuring driveways for estimates I spoke with several property owners who were very skeptical of having someone sealcoat for them.
This concerned me and I inquired about where this skepticism originated. I learned that a “fly by night” sealcoat company had been in the area in the past. They went around to multiple customers and sealed many driveways, in the end only taking cash payments or checks made out to “CASH.”
That afternoon rain moved in and washed away most of these driveways fresh sealcoat as they had not sat long enough to cure.
These people had no recourse and did not even have a contact number to talk with somebody at the company that did the work. They were out their money and did not have a sealcoated driveway as the rain had destroyed it.
I was told there was not so much as a name or telephone number on any of the trucks that these people worked out of. You will never have to worry about that scenario with Seal-Tec. We aren’t going anywhere and contacting us is very simple. Customer trust and satisfaction is our number one concern!
Do You Offer Pressure Washing of Asphalt?
Our services include asphalt sealcoating, hot rubber crack repairing, asphalt patching, and line striping. We also offer pressure washing of the asphalt prior to sealer application for those jobs which may require it.
How Long Does Sealcoat Last?
Most residential driveways are generally fairly low traffic areas.
A good sealcoat job should last 2-3 years on your average residential drive.
There are factors that can alter that time, especially with being in Wisconsin and having the winters that we can have.
Plowing, Snow shoveling, snowblowing, and salt all wear heavily on your diveway’s surface.
The question is, would you rather the destruction be right to your asphalt investment, or to the protective layer of sealcoat?
Once again, maintenance is far cheaper than replacing. Remember that sealcoating too often without having normal wear from vehicular traffic can produce a large buildup of sealcoat that eventually cracks and peels or sheets off.
While it is not good to put off sealcoating your blacktop, it can also be detrimental to do it too often.
What Equipment Do You Use, Can't I just Do It Myself?
It’s a fair question and one you should ask of any contractor, including us.
You should want to know what kind of equipment is being utilized in order to complete your job properly.
Do we have the proper equipment to mix and apply the sealer? Do we have the machines that it takes to prepare the cracks for repair and to get the job ready for final application?
What about the quality of the product that you are being asked to pay for?
Seal-Tec uses a sealcoat product far superior to what you could buy in buckets from a local or national retailer.
Those retail products and the commercial grade products that we use are NOT created equal.
We will NEVER undertake a project with the intention of applying blacktop that you could do yourself. Our crack repair is a very high-quality product that will provide your driveway with years of protection. It is applied at very high temperatures so that it creates a bond with the blacktop, rather than a cold fill product that generally gets hard and brittle and breaks out of the crack.
So no, we recommend you do not try to undertake a driveway blacktop repair yourself, as you’ll almost always end up repeating the work a few months later.
